Ready for planting? Technical planter checklist
Spring is coming, and if you want corn and soybeans to emerge evenly, everything is decided right on the farm. A properly tuned planter is the key to avoiding lost yield potential from day one.
Here’s what to closely watch:
1. Integrity of mechanical components
Carefully inspect every element of the drive train. Wear on gears, seals, or chains can create jerky movement that disrupts uniform seed distribution. Inadequate tension or corrosion directly reduces accuracy in seed spacing and consistency of planting depth.
2. Leveling and frame balance
For consistent seedbed performance, your planter must be perfectly level when hitched. A forward or backward tilt disrupts the angle of the row cleaners/openers and affects seed placement.
Technical note: Do not overlook tire pressure, as it influences planter height and the stability of the seeding units in motion.

3. Pneumatic system and seed distribution Start the fan to confirm that operating pressure is stable and being maintained. This is the ideal time to identify any leaks or blockages in the air lines that could disrupt vacuum or seed flow. 4. Seed trench geometry (opener disks) Worn opener disks no longer create a clean “V” cut, instead leaving a “W”-shaped trench bottom. This poor profile can lead to planting depth variation of 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch, resulting in uneven emergence. 5. Seed tubes The seed’s path to the soil must be smooth and consistent. Any seed tube that is bent, cracked, or has internal burrs will cause unwanted bouncing, breaking the uniformity of the planting pattern. |

6. Residue management 7. Seed trench closing 8. Control systems and electronics • Perform software updates on your monitors. |
This list is really just a starting point. Every planter is different, so feel free to expand it as needed. The important thing is to have your own game plan in mind (or even better, on paper) to inspect the machine from A to Z. It’s the best way to avoid stress and prevent breakdowns when time is tight and conditions are perfect for planting.
Wishing everyone a great growing season! |
